Pre Engineered Steel Buildings: What Makes Roller Doors so Popular?

Roller doors are commonly found on pre engineered steel buildings designed for both commercial and retail applications.

For as long as pre engineered steel buildings have existed, we’ve needed doors to:

  • Provide appropriate access
  • Keep contents safe and secure
  • Contribute to weatherproofing the building envelope

The variety of door types you can choose from is extraordinary. In this post, we’ll look at roller doors—also known as overhead rolling sheet doors—and what makes them a popular choice for steel building applications such as a:

  • Commercial steel garage
  • Retail storefront
  • Mini storage complex

Compact

One of the greatest advantages of roller doors for pre engineered steel buildings is they are compact. Because they move in a vertical plane, there is no need for additional clearances for them to safely operate. This is a major convenience because you won’t constantly have to move vehicles or equipment (on either side of the door) in order for it to open or close.

Strength

Roller doors on a steel garage are comprised of corrugated sheets, which contributes to:

  • Overall strength
  • Stiffness
  • Security
  • Wind resistance

This makes them more resistant to damage in the event of accidental impact (or even intentional damage caused by would-be thieves).

Many roller doors use components that are made for continuous duty, which makes them ideal for commercial operations that require frequent building access. A steel garage for a mechanic’s shop is a good example.

Weatherproof

Compared to other door systems, roller doors won’t allow rain or snow to enter your workspace. Many are fitted with rubber seals, which also keeps pests and debris out.

Door Controls

Depending on the type of business you run, as well as the type of pre engineered steel buildings you’re building, you can choose from several manual and automated door operation options, including:

  • Remote control
  • Auto open/close
  • Haul chain manual system

Automated door openers can be included in the original design or installed at a later date.

Appearance

Due to advances in coating technologies, there is now a wide array of colours you can choose from to make your roller doors look the way you want. It’s even possible to achieve the look of wood-grain finishes. In some instances, it’s possible to add transparent corrugated panels to roller doors so that you can look into (or out of) pre engineered steel buildings.

Modern coatings are highly resistant to UV radiation, so they won’t chalk, peel or fade over time. To learn more about this, check out our post: Coatings on Metal Buildings Bring Aesthetics to the Forefront.

Insulation

While they might not have the level of insulation found in sectional doors, roller doors are available with foam core insulation, which will contribute to the energy efficiency of your steel building.
