Case Study: Customizing a Pre Engineered Steel Building Auto Shop

Metal Structure Concepts installed a new pre engineered steel building for Fountain Tire in Valleyview, AB.

Customization is key when it comes to building a car service, tire and auto repair shop, especially one that is part of a national franchise. Whether it’s a special colour scheme, or above-normal height variances, a pre engineered steel building can suit any number of commercial projects.

When Metal Structure Concepts (MSC) was hired by general contractor H2P Projects Inc. to supply and erect a new steel building for a Fountain Tire project in Valleyview, AB, it had to meet the general contractor’s instructions, which included a larger-than-normal truck canopy.

Putting the pieces together

MSC’s portion of the construction of Valleyview’s Fountain Tire consisted of two parts: the tire-automotive repair shop, and the open canopy to be used as a truck bay. It had to large enough with an open roof system for semis to pull into. While the shop measures 4,608 sq. ft. (64X72 ft.), the canopy measures 2,500 square feet, or 64X40 ft.

“The canopy was customized in that it is 40-feet wide, which is outside the normal size. Most suppliers don’t go wider than 32 feet. We were able to get the parts we needed from Star Buildings, a US company, which supplied all of our pre engineered steel building components. This included the openings —doors, vents, and roof openings,” says MSC owner Steve Ivanitz.

Following a colour scheme

Although the Valleyview Fountain Tire is individually owned, it still needed to follow the specific colour scheme of the Fountain Tire franchise. There are a number of colour options for a steel building. Not only can steel parts and panels be coated at the factory in a number of colours, there is paint made specifically for steel, so you can basically have any colour you want.

“We had to source out for our custom colours, as a specific blue and yellow was needed to be used on the building,” says Ivanitz. “The metal sheeting (liner panels) on outside walls and roof feature custom Fountain Tire colour bands. Otherwise, the buildings have a standing seam roof (24 gauge), custom colour bands, and full interior liner panel ceiling and walls.”

Customer satisfaction guaranteed

All in all, it took 5 weeks for MSC to install the buildings. The work was handled so well that MSC has been optioned to build another Fountain Tire in Alberta.

Evan Heartwell, Operations Manager with H2P Projects Inc., had this to say about the work completed by MSC:

“MSC was selected based on their proposal, which included pricing and product descriptions. Our experience with MSC was overall a positive one. They worked with us to get the project done in an efficient manner. Throughout the construction process, they were easy to get a hold of and we were able to keep things moving forward. MSC worked hard and completed their scope of work ahead of their original schedule, which helped us keep on track with the rest of the project schedule. They did such a great job on this project that we are in the process of hiring them for another one of our projects. I would recommend MSC to anyone looking for a reliable, efficient and professional pre-engineered building contractor.”
